DOES LOVE KEEP COUNT?
Two years after suffering its worst year since the quartz crisis, 2022 saw the watch industry break its all-time export record in terms of value. Admittedly, this success concerns the luxury watch segment and is not as clear-cut across all areas. In this issue, which coincides with the opening of Watches and Wonders, we analyze the trends in Haute Horlogerie, the leading role that Geneva now plays in this field. We also unveil some exclusives and take a look at the diversity of the Twelfth Art, the art of measuring time. Its indisputable dynamism is reflected by the multiplication of skills in which the most desirable and successful brands excel, like H. Moser & Cie. featured on our cover. With its in-house double balance spring, fine craftsmanship, contemporary design, alternating neoclassical and sporty-chic touches, unbridled creativity, controlled expansion and charismatic leadership, the (no longer so) small brand from Schaffhausen could single-handedly illustrate a whole section of our industry’s success.
Alongside it, the giants have resumed moving ahead in giant leaps, as described by our journalists, in reference to the new models from Audemars Piguet, Breitling, Jaeger-LeCoultre and TAG Heuer, to which several pages each are dedicated. Reflecting a similar dynamic, Montblanc is also enjoying a new lease on life and its Global Managing Director of the Watchmaking Division is not short on energy when it comes to reaching new peaks: sincere thanks to Laurent Lecamp for the interview, as well as for the limited series created for members of our Fine Watch Club. In an entirely different segment, a resolutely bold approach lights up the spectacular creations of Jacob & Co. and Jaquet Droz – each implementing directly opposite strategies yet united by exclusivity – to whom we dedicate two supplements.
As a consequence of this spectacular worldwide craze for fine watchmaking, GMT is attracting more and more readers in multiple time zones: after GMT Africa, GMT GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) and GMT Korea, GMT India is being published this spring. Starting this summer, a joint GMT x Tatler Asia publication will inform nearly half a million readers in the main Asian markets. So is it really true to say that love doesn’t keep count?
